During the first half of the 1970s, Labi Siffre operated effortlessly across folk, soul, reggae and funk, while poetically addressing the political and the personal. Although it may seem that his career went under the radar - Siffre recorded six solo albums and scored three Top 40 hits, with 'Crying Laughing Loving Lying' reaching No 11. He has also made an immense cultural impact since, particularly through covers and samples from artists such as Madness and Eminem. Shuffled into the impressive surroundings of London's music theatres for the BBC, Labi Siffre effortlessly performed uncompromising and intimate versions of upcoming songs to promote his then latest work with
hits and misses underlined by a rare kind of sincerity and
warmth. There is no doubt that Siffre wore his heart on his
sleeve, yet for someone living and performing as an openly
gay black folk singer in the 1970s, his conscience was to be
