It is over five years since Kent Records put out their last various artists compilation from the legendary Detroit soul producer Dave Hamilton. Though there are several great uptempo tracks on this latest CD, they have changed the title from "Dancers" to "Soul" as this isn't solely Northern Soul - there are ballads, funk and other sides of Dave's production work evident. Three tracks by Harry Reid, Charmaine and Frenchy & The Chessmen from Dave's first label Temple show off his earliest productions. The last Topper label sides to be reissued are Priscilla Pages quaint Sho Be Doo Be and the 45 remix of her Im Pretending. From a slightly later period comes the 45 version of JT Rhythm's My Sweet Baby which is quite different from the master tape Kent has already issued. Dave's funkier edge is demonstrated with two of his own instrumentals and great vocals from Bobby Dee, Billy Garner and the unknown purveyor of Take Care Of Your Own Business. A very recent big Northern Soul discovery was that Orthea Barnes' Never Ever Leave Me acetate was one of Dave's productions of his and Joe Hunters great mid-60s song. One of the acetates recently fetched a four-figure price tag. Billy Soul's excellent Velvet Sound 60s dancer is merely in the hundreds bracket. A horrendously rare southern style soul ballad 45 is provided by Gene Cooper, while Sue Ann Jones slow offering is more in a nightclub jazz styling. Great 70s vocal group harmonies come from the Moderations, the Webb People and The New Experience. There are also very recently discovered modern soul movers I Don't Play Games and You Got What It Takes as well as a brand new uptempo gospel track from OC Tolbert that will please his newly converted followers.
