Sopwith Camel was the first band out of the Bay Area psychedelic scene to score a hit with 'Hello, Hello' from their self-titled 1967 album, but the group broke up within a year of the album's release, so their re-formation about five years later with largely the same line-up was truly remarkable. Even more remarkable was the album that resulted from the band's reunion. The 1973 Reprise release 'The Miraculous Hump Returns From The Moon' was a far cry from the Lovin' Spoonful-esque 'Hello, Hello' even though they continued to share the same producer with the Spoonful, Eric Jacobsen. Elements of prog-rock, psychedelia, krautrock, jazz, show tunes, and Indian music swirl around 'Hump's heady mix. The result was, as a 2014 appreciation in the Guardian put it, a record that "sounds like it was recorded about a week ago". Indeed, this record at points reminds one of Tame Impala or Stereolab. More contemporanous references might be early Supertramp or Steely Dan all overlaid with a self-referential, ironic tone that adds tang to the perfumed exoticism. This first vinyl reissue in 45 years of this early '70s classic comes with the original gatefold artwork with lyrics. Marbled "smoke" pressing, limited to 750 copies!
