Over the past forty plus years British film director Tony Palmer has established himself as one of the country?s foremost director?s of documentary and factual based films. One of Tony Palmers first successes was the film All My Loving which was released in 1968. Some seven years later Tony had the idea, encouraged by John Lennon to document the history of popular music. The result was the groundbreaking and award winning series of films made for television under the title ?All You Need Is Love? The full series of films was released in 2008 to great critical and commercial acclaim. Volume three Jungle Music-Jazz covers the music form that brought forward names like Charles Mingus and Miles Davis. Jazz is not a black music, nor a white music. Nor is it structures less improvisation. Nor did it originate in New Orleans. As created at the turn of the century throughout the American south, it had a quite specific and limited meaning. Its form was strict, as were the morals and musical principles which guided its early exponents. This film will seek to examine the origins of jazz, and show how these were exploited and eventually lost by greed. Jazz is a story of apartheid in music in which a unique blend of white musical discipline and black sensibility was comprised and laid waste.
