Popis - AGRARIA:
In January 2010, author and nationally acclaimed environmental advocate Dan Imhoff took some time off to pursue a lifelong passion. He was 50 years old, had just spent two years producing a 450-page coffee table-size critique of factory farming. He hoped that a trip to music school might help purge some images of animal abuse from his psyche and recharge his batteries. After a successful audition at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Imhoff packed up some clothes, a few guitars, and sublet an apartment at the base of Beacon Hill. He entered Berklee as a freshman and for the next four months immersed himself in first-year classes—ear training, composition, private and group guitar instruction. Some advance planning also enabled him to attend upper-level songwriting workshops with noted instructors Pat Pattison and Mark Simos. “Berklee is the Hogwarts of music,” says Imhoff. “It’s a magical place with 4,000 students who speak the language of music day and night. What a blast to spend four months there with so many amazing teachers and students who were pushing me to dig deeper.” The seeds of Imhoff’s latest musical project “Agraria” were sown during the four-month sabbatical. A guitar player and songwriter with the Northern California band Cahoots, Imhoff’s ten new songs cover a wide range of styles. There’s a civil war like ballad with a horn section, two uptempo rocking shuffles, a bluegrass breakdown and a gorgeous country waltz. Story telling is a deep part of Imhoff’s songwriting and his lyrics often transport listeners to another place and time. There’s the tale of “Rooftop Girl” who wants to plant gardens on top of inner city buildings. In the CD’s opening song, “Compass,” two young people fall in love and try to make a home for themselves on a farm. “My Father’s Son” is a tribute to Imhoff’s father, who gave him his first guitar, and passed away in 2011. The CD was produced and mixed by Matt Wright at Prairie Sun Studios, made famous in the 1990s by Tom Waits. All of the musicians on the record had ties to Sonoma County, a hotbed of organic farming, environmental activism and musical talent. From keyboardist Mike Emerson, to young bassist Josh Fossgreen and drummer Dave Rollans, each song has a solid rhythmic backbone. Imhoff was joined by his long-time Cahoots collaborators, steel guitar player and vocalist, Craig Anderson, and multi-instrumentalist Dru Rodgers. Imhoff is also joined on a few songs by amazing vocalist, Moorea Dickason and Brothers Comatose fiddler, Philip Brenzina. “My goal was to make a record that you would want to listen to over and over,” says Imhoff. “I have wanted to write about Agraria for a long time.”
