With a history dating back nearly 20 years, echolyn has forged a musical path that has earned them a reputation as one the most innovative bands in the history of the genre. Formed in 1989 they began developing their live show and song writing that lead to their self titled debut which was released in 1991. The debut gradually made it’s way to open ears around the world and quickly helped echolyn gain momentum and credibility as a truly unique alternative to “alternative”. 1992’s release of “Suffocating the Bloom” marked the start of the band truly coming into it’s own musically and marked their conviction to originality and refusal to conform a given style or genre. These ideas were explicitly driven home in the 28:13 opus “A Suite for the Everyman” which served as a pointed critique of the music industry and it’s penchant for selling artists as an image rather than focusing on the music itself. “Suffocating the Bloom” remains a favorite among fans. Between 1991 and 93 echolyn toured much of Northeastern U.S and Canada. The hard work finally paid off in the summer of 93 when they earned the attention of Sony Music and created 1995’s “As the World”. The title track as well as the powerful “ Never the Same” have served as some of the most popular recordings by echolyn. By fall of 1995 frequent touring and little support from Sony had finally taken its toll on the band and resulted in the band taking a much needed break. In 1999 echolyn reformed, to create “Cowboy Poems Free” which marked a more mature writing style. The album, focusing on Americana in the first half of the 20th Century amazingly capturing both grand and intimate themes. 2002 saw the release of Mei which was the bands most ambitious effort. Written as one 50 minute piece Mei featured strings, tuned percussion and woodwinds as well as the bands stunning playing, singing and lyrics. “The End is Beautiful” released in 2005 explored uncharted areas lyrically and musically and employed the use of a horn section for some of the songs. Recorded live in upstate NY the band captured an explosion of energy and raw emotion which has made “The End Is Beautiful” yet another favorite of the fans. Supporting the album release many shows were played in Europe , The States and Canada to much critical acclaim. In 2008 the machinery is once again turning in the echolyn camp. With the re-release of “Cowboy Poems Free”, a scheduled new album and tour to support it echolyn continues to be one of the most influential and innovative progressive rock bands in history.
